Along the path of your life, certain seminal moments arise that offer you the opportunity to choose whether you’ll take the courageous hero’s journey, or the journey of the safe and meek.
These are the times in your life when you are called forth. Sometimes it’s a person, a teacher, partner, or parent that issues the wake up call and challenges you to grow bigger. Often times it is your dissatisfaction with your own smallness that does the trick.
This is not just the ego once again expressing its needs; this is the deep call to meaning that forces you to ask yourself whether or not what you do matters.
The hero does what few are able to do when called forth. He accepts the call. Unlike the masses of people who are frightened at the idea of standing taller and taking responsibility for the space they take up on the planet, the hero simply says yes.
The hero not only accepts, but goes even deeper and surrenders. By surrendering, the hero falls into alignment with the larger energy and wisdom of the universe. He gains power and clarity by not forcing his own agenda on his new state of being. Instead, he rides the waves of blissful calm that are a product of a life being led exactly as it should be.
The hero doesn’t ask, “What will this higher experience of life bring me?” Instead he asks, “What do I need to give up?” That is the hero’s question. He knows that it’s his responsibility to shed the habits, behaviors, and people who no longer serve his higher purpose. This is the cost of taking this journey—there is always a cost to growth. But the hero sees that the cost is much higher in not surrendering to being called forth: It is nothing less than a wasted life.
So fearlessly the hero leans into his journey with no thought to the outcome. He knows that the only guarantee is the journey and he surrenders to each moment of it. The idea of success and failure is non existent as the hero fearlessly moves forward. With no thought toward his own comfort or security, he has left those hindrances behind—he focuses only on fulfilling what he has been called forth to do.
Check in with yourself and see what your reactions are to being called forth in your artistic life. Do you seek out the people, situations, and opportunities that challenge you to be a bigger version of yourself, or do you use your energy to stay safe and stagnant?
The hero’s journey is not something you’re automatically entitled to. It’s a way of life that happens only when you recognize when you are being called forth, and when you answer that call with acceptance, surrender and fearless perseverance.
It’s a journey you earn, but once on it, you’ll see that there is simply no other way.
