Networking Organizations You Should Know

  • Share:

In an industry so dependent on connections and who you know, it's important to get out there and meet people. But how and where? Consider these networking organizations:

The Actors' Network

The Actors' Network is an L.A.-based organization that provides networking and education for actors. Its website also provides databases and resources for actors. Membership rates are $50 per month, but free orientation sessions give you an overview of what the organization has to offer.

SAG Foundation

You must be a member of one of the unions-SAG, AFTRA, or Equity-to participate in SAG Foundation events. These events bring in panels and speakers and allow actors to stay and mingle after the event. The foundation also offers the Actors Center: a space where actors can come network or work (there's Wi-Fi and a library of resources) during the day. Nonunion actors are permitted at "Back Stage at the SAG Foundation" panels.

JHRTS (Junior Hollywood Radio and Television Society)

This networking group is the junior branch of HRTS and is made up of individuals starting their careers. Membership is $40 per year and includes access to panels, roundtables, volunteer meet-ups, and monthly mixers. However, anyone can join the Facebook group for free, and most of the networking events are open to nonmembers. Events are held on both coasts.

The Screenplay Lab

Although its name makes it sound like it's just for writers, ScreenPlayLab started with a small group of writers and actors who got together to workshop pages in front of a live audience. Lab members receive a weekly email newsletter listing industry events in Hollywood. The group also holds monthly mixers in Beverly Hills and hosts other special events. There is no membership or cover charge for the mixers.

Women in Film

This national organization offers networking brunches, screenings, speaker series, workshops, and various other events. Mentoring programs are also available. Membership in WIF also provides discounts to other networking events and media services. Membership dues vary, but students can join for $50 per year.

Film Independent

Designed to nurture independent filmmakers, the group provides monthly preview screenings and networking events. The group also publishes information on networking events and educational events that are open to the public. Membership rates vary, starting at $60 per year for students.

Nebraska Coast Connection

The Coast Connection isn't just for Nebraskans. All industry professionals are invited to attend the mixers, which take place at the Culver City Hotel the second Monday of every month and cost $10 (unless you volunteer for the organization; then they're free).

Besides these organizations, of course, various meet-up groups, online social networking groups, and school alumni groups provide great networking opportunities.
