Knowing your craft requires more than technique. Summer internships offer actors a great way to make connections at theaters and immerse themselves in the behind-the-scenes aspects of producing a play.
NEW YORK CITY
The Public theater
This Off-Broadway theater offers paid internships in lighting, sound, scenery, props, costumes, stage management, production management, and general production. Runs April 1–Sept. 1; start and end dates are flexible.
Roundabout Theatre Company
Paid internships provide hands-on experience in various departments, as well as weekly seminars with members of Roundabout’s senior staff. Applications are due March 7; internships run June–August.
Manhattan Theater Club
Offers paid internships focused on producing not-for-profit theater both on and Off-Broadway. Applications must be received by the second Friday in March.
Steppenwolf Theatre company
The famed Chicago theater offers summer arts administration and production positions. Applications are due Feb. 15; internships run June 2–Aug. 29.
Lookingglass theatre company
Internships are available to current college students or recent grads interested in professional theater administration or production—and who are prepared to work in a highly collaborative environment. Applications are due March 7; internships run June–August.
Center Theatre Group
L.A.’s largest nonprofit theater offers interns exposure to a wide variety of performance arts. Applications are accepted beginning in April; internships run June–August.
California Shakespeare Theater
Internships are available with various departments for the Professional Immersion Program at Cal Shakes. Applications are due Feb. 24; internships begin May 12 and June 16.
