Working New York City actors offer their advice on maintaining a living as a performer. Back Stage's Working Actor columnist Michael Kostroff ("The Wire"), Kevin Ligon (currently in "The Phantom of the Opera"), and Julie Ann Emery ("Hitch," "Line of Fire") share their experience and expertise.

Michael Kostroff, Actor and Back Stage Columnist
Michael Kostroff writes the Working Actor advice column for Back Stage (with Jackie Apodaca). He's also a working actor, best known for his five seasons on HBO's "The Wire" and two seasons on Disney's "Sonny With a Chance."

He's guest-starred on "Without a Trace," "The Middle," "The Closer," "Cold Case," "Party Down," "Weeds," "Brothers and Sisters," "Boston Legal," "ER," "The West Wing," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," "The King of Queens," and many other TV shows, done national tours of "The Producers" and "Les Misérables," and appeared in regional theater all over the country.

He's the author of "Letters From Backstage" and creator of the Audition Psych. 101 workshop.

Kevin Ligon, Actor
Kevin Ligon is currently appearing at the Majestic Theatre in the Broadway production of "The Phantom of the Opera" in the role of Firmin, the opera manager. He has previously appeared on Broadway in "Sister Act," "Finian's Rainbow," "Young Frankenstein," "The Producers," "Kiss Me, Kate," "1776," and "The Secret Garden."

National tours: "The Producers" (also the L.A. company), "Guys and Dolls" (1992 revival, Jeff Award for best supporting actor), "A Grand Night for Singing," and "Hello, Dolly!" Off-Broadway: "Forbidden Broadway," "The Chosen," and Encores! productions of "Finian's Rainbow," "Carnival," and "The Boys From Syracuse."

Regional credits: Man #2 in "Five Course Love" (Geva Theatre Center), Sancho in "Man of La Mancha" (Sacramento Music Circus), Gussie in "By Jeeves" (Goodspeed, Geffen Playhouse), Snake in "The Apple Tree" (Goodspeed), Billis in "South Pacific" (Dallas Theater Center), and Pirelli in "Sweeney Todd" at the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration.
