Representatives from the arts and culture committees of the 12 Manhattan community boards met Thursday with Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and agreed to work together to form a tax-relief proposal for Off-Off-Broadway theaters.

According to a statement from the Innovative Theatre Foundation, the proposal would provide incentives to landlords offering performing-arts venues long-term below-market leases. This would affect approximately 50 theaters in the city that serve as performance spaces for more than 400 small theater companies and other performing-arts organizations.

"We are so inspired by the dedication and camaraderie of the community boards," Shay Gines, executive director of the Innovative Theatre Foundation, said in a written statement. "Their thoughtful stewardship helps ensure that independent theater will continue to be a part of the vibrant culture of New York City."
