Production Description

Casting "33 Variations," by Moises Kaufman. The play travels between the present day and nineteenth century Austria. In modern day New York a brilliant musicologist, Dr. Katharine Brandt, is slowly degenerating from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. On a trip to Bonn, Germany, she encounters a rather stoic but humorous Dr. Gertrude Ladenberger, who soon becomes a very close friend. Meanwhile, in 1819 Vienna, Beethoven is compelled to enter a competition inspired by the publisher Anton Diabelli, who has challenged 50 composers to write a single variation on a simple waltz that Diabelli has written. Throughout the show, Beethoven’s work is not only projected for the audience to see each variations evolution, but will also be played by a live pianist.
