Role Description

Walter: (Lead) a responsible zookeeper at the Central Park Zoo who attends to the penguin exhibit, sees Roy and Silo's sadness when a rock they tend to does not hatch into a baby chick, and he gives them an incubated orphaned egg, going against his instincts to avoid controversy.

Walter/Lily Side

LILY
What are we going to do?

WALTER
I don’t know.

LILY
I had no idea this would happen. I didn’t know that other people would care or get upset. They’re really, really upset.

WALTER
The zoo wants me to split the penguins up.

LILY
Walter you can’t! What about the egg? Who’s going to take care of it? Who’s going to make sure it gets tucked in at night, and -

WALTER
I’ll take care of it.

LILY
But you said to me that the eggs are extremely fragile, and if they’re taken away from the parents they might not survive.

WALTER
Lily, you don’t understand what’s at stake. Leave this to the adults.

LILY
But you saw what happened to Roy and Silo. They’ll stop eating, they might die if you split them up! That’s what’s at stake! And now they need to protect the egg.

WALTER
And I need to protect my job.

LILY
Walter, just look at them. This is what they’re meant to do.

(Roy and Silo gently take turns sitting on the egg. When one of the parents is on the egg, the other is helping to prune feathers, check on the nest, and snuggling close to keep each other warm.)

WALTER
Lily-

(Walter hesitates, he’s doesn’t know what to say, so he gets angry.)

This is what I mean. You’re just too young to understand! I can’t sit around and explain this to you. I could lose my job. Do you realize that? No more penguins, no more visits, no more Junior Keeper camps.
