Dad has pulled himself out of a childhood of poverty and ignorance in rural Kansas to become a respected business owner in Holt. He has seen the world in stark contrasts, but his impending death brings the potential for new understanding.

MARY LEWIS
Female / Caucasian / late 60’s. Dad’s wife for over fifty years. Patient. Determined. Resourceful. Mary is a natural nurturer, but she is not afraid to fiercely stand up for something she believes is right and necessary.

LORRAIN LEWIS
Female / Caucasian / 40’s. Mary and Dad’s daughter. Plain-spoken. Thoughtful. Sad. Lorraine has returned home to Holt from Denver to help care for her father. Like both of her parents she is tough and resourceful and loves Dad and Mary deeply. However, the loss of her only child to a car accident many years ago continues to haunt her.

ALENE JOHNSON
Female / Caucasian / 60’s. Bright. Intuitive. Lonely. Alene is a newly retired 3rd grade school teacher who has returned home to live with her mother again in Holt. This change in her life has brought about a crisis of identity and worth. However, she finds hope in a budding friendship with Alice, a newly arrived eight-year-old girl.

WILLA JOHNSON
Female / Caucasian / late 70’s. Confident. Well-ordered. Resolved. Willa is Alene’s mother. She was a former school teacher who gave up her profession when she got married and kept house on her husband’s ranch outside of Holt. A widow of many years now she has come to terms with her age and her life. She has a strong moral backbone and an intuitive sense of social justice.

REVERNED LYLE
Male / Racially Ambiguous, possibly Mixed Race or Hispanic / late 40’s. Intellectual. Compassionate. Wounded. Reverend Robert Lyle is the new pastor of the Community Church in Holt, assigned to this new church because of a controversial sermon he gave in Denver in support of an openly gay preacher. FRANK / RICHARD
Male / Caucasian / 50’s. Frank is Mary and Dad’s son. Having grown up gay in the small community of Holt he left town directly after graduating high school and never came back. Appearing to Dad as a kind of spirit, he still bears much of the pain and bitterness caused by his childhood and the lack of empathy and understanding given to him by his father. Richard is Lorraine’s boyfriend in Denver. His good intentions are marred by his natural self-absorption.

RUDY / JOE / MAN 3
Male / Caucasian / 40’s – 50’s. Rudy is an assistant manager at Dad’s hardware store, along with Bob. Rudy is the talkative one. Joe is a long-time cook at a diner in Denver where Dad and Mary’s son, Frank, once worked. Man 3 is a member of the Community Church congregation in Holt.
