Production Description

Casting "Dust," a short film, which will be a visual poem, chronicling the journey of Larissa, an aspirant model, as she strives to leave her mark in the world. Producer states: "Drawing inspiration from Terrence Malick's 'Tree of Life' and Petra Costa's documentary 'Elena,' this short film will concentrate on an aesthetic exploration of the construction of female identity as well as the concept of transience."

Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations

Shoots July 18, 24, 30 & Aug. 5 (half days) in NYC.

Compensation & Union Contract Details

No pay, but meals and transportation covered. Union contracts will be negotiated if talent is represented.

Dust Treatment

This short film is a visual poem, chronicling the journey of Larissa, an aspirant model, as she strives to leave her mark in the world.

Drawing inspiration from Terrence Malick's Tree of Life and Petra Costa's documentary Elena, this short will concentrate on a aesthetic exploration of the construction of female identity as well as the concept of transience. As humans we strive to leave an impact. Is a legacy a building that stands on decades after its architect is gone? Is it the scars we leave on the souls of others? Or is it personal – can a legacy stem from self-fulfillment?

Larissa's goal is to matter. She approaches New York with a sense of wild optimism. The streets glitter to her. It is a place of magic.

What Larissa left behind is a boyfriend named Beau. While Larissa is enamoured with the timeless endurance of New York's old buildings, he sees the world in different light. The scale is off. These buildings, which Larissa idolizes, are to him obsolete.

She lands her first job on a fashion shoot. The photographer gazes down his lens and is dissatisfied with what he sees. She is too airy, not solid enough. Larissa's confidence is chipped away. The streets lose their glowing veneer. We see the detritus of a broken city smeared on the sidewalks, and with it we feel Larissa's disappointment.

To her Beau, her attempts to crack New York are silly. He is frustrated that she does not see that the most important effect she has on the world is on him. Her words, her presence, transcends geography. He can feel her fingers on his stubble and her soft breath at his ear when they connect via Skype.

In trying to leave her mark, Larissa is ultimately forced into a mold. On her next shoot, she stands aside Grecian stone sculptures and blends in. Her body is rigid. The photographer moves around her, manipulating the reflections from her crystal jewellery and makeup. Her eyes are fixed and determined.

The city sparkles on, beckoning across the universe.
