Role Description

Janice Ponder: (Lead) was raised in Atlanta, GA; met her husband Kevin while he was in Atlanta attending a civil rights organizational meeting; she was there with her father, the Pastor of an Atlanta church; she continued to be involved in the movement; after their marriage; the couple moved to Chicago then the South Bronx, New York; a loyal and nurturing woman with traditional views about family; expects the man to be the head of he household and provider of the family; did not want to leave the South; in Atlanta her family was highly regarded; she lived a comfortable life and knew how to navigate Southern race relations; loyal to her husband she moved North; had difficulty adjusting to the foreign and cold (climate and people) conditions of the North; while she was having trouble adjusting her husband was having trouble finding steady employment, a fact she would constantly remind him of; when her husband abandoned the family she was devastated and ill equipped to be a single mother in the South Bronx; pride probably kept her from returning to Atlanta; tried to find work as best she could, using her people skills to obtain employment for which she was unqualified; the sporadic nature of her work and the pressures of her circumstances led her to start drinking; she became an alcoholic and then a drug user; throughout her dependency, she remained a nurturing and protective mother providing the basic needs of her children. After her personal crisis boiled over she returned to her spiritual roots, began attending church, AA meetings and became a community organizer.
