GAVAGE CHARACTER SIDES - RAMONA - 01/22/14

SCENE ONE - KIRSTEN

INT. SOUP KITCHEN - DAY

Kirsten (15) and Francis (16) are behind a counter. Both are

dressed in aprons, handing out bread and soup to a line of

homeless men and women.

KIRSTEN

You should really be careful what

you say to my father.

FRANCIS

Why?

KIRSTEN

He told me why you come here,

Francis.

He says nothing.

KIRSTEN

Play dumb if you like. My Dad tells

me everything.

FRANCIS

Everything?

KIRSTEN

When it comes to you. Yeah. I know

all about your meeting outside 7-

11. Why else would you volunteer

your time? You don’t strike me as

the religious type, Francis.

FRANCIS

Really.

KIRSTEN

Not at all.

FRANCIS

And what type are you?

KIRSTEN

I’m a good Christian girl. A

successful career as a doctor or

lawyer already mapped out for me by

my loving Pastor father.

FRANCIS

So, this straight-laced exterior is

all an act.

KIRSTEN

I’m just smarter than you. I see

the futility of rebelling. Your

type piss everyone off and then you

fail. Appearances are everything.

This way, I get to do what I want.

FRANCIS

If that’s really true you won’t

mind joining me out back for a hit

of ice then.

KIRSTEN

All right. I’ll see you out back in

two minutes.

Francis pulls off his apron and throws it down to the floor.

FRANCIS

I’ll be waiting.

Kirsten gives a homeless guy a winning smile. She serves him

a bowl of soup.

KIRSTEN

God bless you.

EXT. LOADING DOCK - DAY

Francis, zones out, smoking a cigarette.

KIRSTEN

(O.S.)

So, where is it?

Francis takes a drag on a cigarette, turns to greet Kirsten,

who looks a little apprehensive.

KIRSTEN

I’m ready.

FRANCIS

You really want to do this?

KIRSTEN

Yeah. You think I didn’t do ice

before?

FRANCIS

You’re okay with doing it here?

Kirsten turns back to the loading dock.

FRANCIS

Do you even know what ice is?

KIRSTEN

Yes.

FRANCIS

So you know that it’s the same

thing as crack?

KIRSTEN

Yeah. What did I just say? I’ve

done it before.

FRANCIS

You’re full of shit.

Francis takes a few steps closer to her.

KIRSTEN

Where’s the ice?

Francis leans in and kisses her. She doesn’t resist.

SCENE TWO - RAMONA

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Playing on a toy xylophone, Ramona (15) sits crossed-legged

on the carpet, transformed, her hair tied back

She smiles as Jo (30s) crosses the room, closes the window

and draws the drapes together.

JO

It’ll be light soon. We have to

keep them closed.

RAMONA

It’s hot in here.

JO

It’s normal. Soon you’ll feel

cold... Until we do it again. You

want me to run you bath?

RAMONA

No, I can do it.

Jo sits on the sofa. She brushes Ramona’s hair to one side to

reveal -

A BANDAGE on Ramona’s neck.

RAMONA

What was your first time like?

JO

Painful. After it was done though,

I was grateful. In time, you’ll

feel grateful too.

RAMONA

I’m sorry.

JO

There’s nothing to be sorry for,

sweetheart.

RAMONA

I don’t want to disappoint you. I

don’t want to disappoint Him.

Jo peels the bandage off to show a HEALING BITE MARK BENEATH.

Ramona winces as Jo touches it. Jo takes some ointment and

rubs it into the BITE MARK, then applies a fresh bandage.

JO

You’re special to me. You know

that, right?

RAMONA

You’re special to me too.

Jo kisses her on the forehead.

JO

Shutter the windows. Then come

upstairs.

Jo gets up and leaves the room.

RAMONA

Goodnight, Jo.

JO

Goodnight.

The smile fading from her face, Ramona crosses to the window.

She looks at the high wall at the back of the ratty backyard,

opening her palm to reveal -

THE LONG RUSTY NAIL.

Her face betraying nothing, she begins to shutter the

windows, enveloping herself in pitch black darkness.

Zeke Sides

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
A black disc spins on a phonograph.

Celeste dances with ETHAN (mid-20s), American Boy Handsome.

Their cheeks are flushed. They’re in high spirits. The
tension released.

Indistinct in the shadows of an adjoining room, a few members
of the cult flirt and cavort.

JO
At the table. The only one not swept up in the moment.

From the other side of the room, standing next to the
phonograph,

ZEKE (50s)
Watches her.

He crosses to where she’s sitting, stands over her.

ZEKE
You don’t look well, Jo.

Jo says nothing. Zeke sits next to her, brushes her cheek
with the back of his hand.

ZEKE
Are you mad at me?

JO
We need to talk about Ramona.

ZEKE
You trust me?

JO
Yes.

ZEKE
Implicitly?

JO
Yes.

ZEKE
What’s the first thing I taught you
when you came to me?

JO
That hunger makes us stronger.

ZEKE
That’s right. It brings us closer to a pure state. It lets us taste death. It makes us grateful for what we are.

Zeke makes eye contact with Jo, who stares right back at him,intimidated but trying not to show it.

JO
Have you ever seen anyone hold out this long before?

ZEKE
For everyone it’s a little different. I can tell you she’ll be fine. We won’t punish her.

JO
What are we doing now?

ZEKE
We’re shielding her from the horror of the world.

Jo grinds her teeth, bites at her bruised fingernails. No relief.

ZEKE
She resists because she’s special. Just like you.

Zeke rounds the table, picks up a pair of tweezers, clicking them together. He reaches down and clamps them round a sugar cube in a bowl.

He takes the sugar cube and dips it into a

Saucer
Full
Of
Blood.

THE SUGAR CUBE

Soaks up the blood.

Zeke pincers the red sugar cube with the tweezers, moving them in a circular motion towards Jo’s lips.

HER PUPILS

Dilate.

THE HAIRS ON HER ARM

Stand on edge.

Jo, aroused, looks at Celeste. She smiles, silently egging Jo
on.
