MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. - African-American Male, 39 years old.

CAMAE - African American Female 25+. A young beautiful maid.


FLOYD BARTON– Male, African-American, late 20’s-mid 30’s, an aspiring blues singer, just out of prison, asked to sign a record deal after a song he recorded months before becomes and unexpected hit.

CANEWELL– Male, African-American, 30’s-40’s, plays in Floyd’s band.

HEDLEY– Male, African-American, 40’s+, mentally unstable, Louise takes care of him, sick with

RED CARTER– Male, African-American, 30’s-40’s, plays in Floyd’s band.

VERA– Female, African-American, Late 20’s to mid 30’s, passionate, Floyd’s jilted lover who can’t seem to let him go no matter how hard she tries.

LOUISE– Female, African-American, 40’s+, the “mother” of the group.

RUBY– Female, African-American, mid 20’s, originally from Alabama, too beautiful for her own good.


ODESSA ORTIZ- 39, Puerto Rican, aka Haikumom, founder of a website for recovering crack addicts, works odd janitorial jobs, lives one notch above squalor.

ELLIOT ORTIZ- 24, an Iraq vet with a slight limp, works at Subway Hoagies, scores an occasional job as a model or actor, Yazmin’s cousin, Odessa’s birth son.

YAZMIN ORTIZ- 29, in her first year as an adjunct professor of music, Odessa’s niece and
Elliot’s cousin.

FOUNTAINHEAD- aka John, a computer programmer and entrepreneur, lives on Philadelphia’s
Main Line, white. Also plays a CUSTOMER.

CHUTES&LADDERS- lives in San Diego, has worked a low-level job at the IRS since the Reagan years, African-American, his real name is Clayton “Buddy” Wilkie.

ORANGUTAN- a recent community college graduate, Japanese by birth, her real name is
Madeleine Mays and before that Yoshiko Sakai.

A GHOST- also plays PROFESSOR AMAN, an Arabic professor at Swarthmore; also plays A POLICEMAN in Japan; also plays an OFFICE ASSISTANT


RENE GALLIMARD- male, Late 40’s for most of the play. Gallimard is a former French diplomat who has been imprisoned for treason. His crime was passing classified documents to the Chinese, through his lover, Song.

SONG LILING- Young male, a beautiful Chinese opera diva who is actually a man masquerading as a woman. Song pretends to fit the stereotype that Western men have of the submissive Oriental woman, however, Song can also be assertive in his views about how women are
treated in Chinese society and of the West's prejudiced attitude to China. Sings and dances.

MARC/MAN #2/CONSUL SHARPLESS- Male. 50’s +. Marc is an old school friend of Gallimard's, and his complete opposite.

RENEE/WOMAN AT PARTY/GIRL IN MAGAZINE- Young female. Renee is a student from Denmark with whom Gallimard has an affair. She is physically attractive and sexually uninhibited. The actress playing Renee also doubles in a brief scene as a fantasy porno actress. Partial nudity is involved.

COMRADE CHIN/SUZUKI/SHU FANG– Asian Female 30-40. Comrade Chin is the Chinese
Communist Party official who instructs Song to spy.

HELGA– Female 40’s. Helga is Gallimard's wife. While the couple lives in Beijing, she remains ignorant of Chinese culture and appears to dislike the Chinese.
M. TOULON/MAN #1/JUDGE- Male. 50’s +. Toulon is the French Ambassador in Beijing. KUROGO DANCERS– men/women, “invisible” stage hand used in Japanese Kabuki theatre, do
not have to be dancers but must be movement competent. Will also understudy.
