James Leary, Director

Production Description

Casting "Komplex," a reworking of Nikolai Gogol’s 1836 play “The Government Inspector.” This satire of human greed, corruption and ambition has been moved from the backwater Ukrainian village setting of the original play to a fledging cultural compound located in a blighted, post-industrial ghetto of current day outer-borough New York. Producer states: “It’s a comedy of errors: The young, stylish and absurdly ambitious denizens of this community get wind of the impending visit of an important taste-maker from the city center and proceed to fall over each other in a protracted and hysterical preparation. When a haughty, African/British dandy is mistaken for the visitor, the backstabbing begins. It takes the dandy a conveniently long time to realize the mistake and by then he’s already hit everyone up for loans, drugs, and sex and is more or less ready to split. When he does, the rug is pulled out from the deluded left behind who remain in the obscure stew of their failed dreams.”
