Role Description

Lyla Mann: (Lead) moved to Columbus, OH from the Appalachian Highlands – a small rural area in Harlan County, Kentucky – when she was 17; had three children with three different men and supports herself through welfare and drug dealing; willful and suspicious of authority and Christian do-gooders; has concocted her own form of spirituality from combining superstition with New Age popular religions; her home is a place where adults gather to smoke, drink, take drugs and escape from their lives of pain and failure. Lyla is impulsive and quick to angry outbursts; uneducated and has no work skills or career, and little desire to leave the cycle of poverty; believes that her children should be obedient and that she can show them how to survive in a tough and hostile world; lies to social services about her children and lives in conflict with her neighbors but her customers love her and hang at her house for dull conversation, smokes, booze and pills. Note: Works all 4 days.
