Role Description

Mrs. Lupino/Dr. Vivian Meniscus : (Lead) Actor plays two roles. Mrs. Lupino is 40s, traditional, subservient, and fastidiously groomed. She sings and smiles compulsively, perhaps to relieve the constant stress swelling under the Lupino roof. She considers it a mark of her failure that, despite her efforts, her daughter has turned out so odd and un-girlish. Dr. Meniscus is The Meanman's scientific advisor and lieutenant. She oversees the procedures to "reform" stray children unfortunate enough to be caught by the Meanman's minions. She is also an amateur poet. Note: While the same actor will play both roles, two distinct characterizations are encouraged.

Production Description

The Shelter is casting "Lily & Kosmo Live." In 1951, Lily Lupino is a 6-year-old Brooklynite who regularly escapes into her favorite radio serials. But when Kosmo Kidd crash lands in her living room, Lily jumps at the chance to join Kosmo's crew of boy astronauts, or "Spacetronauts," and experience a real live space adventure. Together Lily and Kosmo face a host of galactic perils, culminating in a terrifying confrontation with the vilest villain in space, the child-hating Meanman of Morgo. But Lily's biggest challenge is proving to her new peers that a girl from Brooklyn has all it takes to be a true Spacetronaut.

Lily & Kosmo Live is a multi-media theatrical event, incorporating live performance, projected animation, and live sound effects/music. Actors will perform in a manner similar to a live broadcast serial of the 1950s, standing at microphones, with minimal blocking and physicalization. The roles of children will be played by adults. Actors playing Davy C. Rocket, Pando, and Gernsback will also play various incidental characters.
