Role Description

Miss Janus: (Supporting) the senior typist in the office, and the personal secretary to Mr. Walker, Miss Janus has been with this firm for ten years. She knows more about how the office functions than anyone, including the partners. She’s described as “neither attractive nor particularly plain.” She’s tidy, wears sensible if slightly conservative office attire, and has a brusque cheery sulkiness about her. But has she wasted her youth in this office? Her personal situation is increasingly desperate as the play goes on. She’s not a girl any more, wise and slightly cynical about the ways of the world and the intentions of men and the nature of business. She sees in Pat an image of her younger self and wants to prevent her from making the same mistakes. Sees herself as a kind of older sister to all of the other young women in the office. In the office, she’s the perfect, efficient, unsentimental, detail-oriented secretary. Underneath that, she’s smart, courageous, passionate, willful, wry. London accent.
