Production Description

Casting "Lotto Fever in the Sucker State," set at Rayners Victory Café, a diner at a crossroads in central Illinois circa 1988. Synopsis: The farm foreclosure crisis has hit hard, and life for the locals has taken a difficult turn. The new, young “citified” entrepreneur of the diner, Steven Rayner, is desperately trying to build his customer base, with comically mixed results. His steadiest customers, the Smithfield family, farmers, have resorted to ritually playing the Illinois State Lottery to mask the fact they are losing the family farm. Unbeknownst to the rest of his family, Calvin has his own plan to save the family farm, and his efforts have attracted the authorities, two agents that think marijuana is being grown in the area, but its exact whereabouts are unclear. They use the diner as a base of operations as they covertly stumble their way to locating the marijuana, and try to discover the perpetrators. Add to this mix a confused Professor of English Literature who has gotten lost on his way to the University of Illinois and has decided the café is the ideal location to engage in field work for his true love, American Colloquialism. The final character, Noreen the Waitress, acts as a one woman Greek chorus to the madness she sees swirling around her. Will Stephen make Rayner’s a success? Will the bumbling agents find the pot? Will we ever find out why Zachary is so angry at his grandson Calvin? Will Malcolm discover what the numbers that Mary seems to spout at random mean? Will Helen ever stop praying over lottery tickets and properly mourn her dead husband? Will Stephen ever get his tongue down Mary’s throat? And exactly how many millions of dollars of lottery tickets has Malcolm purchased, and why did he throw the bulk of them away? All this and more will be revealed in “Lotto Fever in the Sucker State,” a "wild hay ride of a play that will make you laugh…until you cry. Literally."
