Director's Note

"The play will be done in a broadly melodramatic style, not cartoonishly or condescendingly, but nevertheless mechanical and ‘over the top’. Actors will not so much play the characters as play 19th century melodrama actors playing the characters. The pace is faster than in a contemporary naturalistic style, and every gesture and inflection is calculated for the effect it will have on the audience: it’s all about 'indicating'. All actors will play multiple roles, some with very fast changes, so an ability to do vivid character work is essential. Non-traditional casting is welcomed."
