Role Description

Existentialisme: (Lead) Shnuffle’s slightly anthropomorphized best friend cat, cranky, behaves like a teenager, but really loves Shnuffle, morphs into a human twice throughout the play, once in a flashback to play Raphael, Young Henri’s cocky French friend, and in the final scene in which he gives Shnuffle advice.

Existentialisme Sides

Shnuffle’s cat. At times slightly anthropomorphized. Hungry, cranky, acts how a teenage boy would act, if reincarnated as a cat.
(also plays Raphael - flashback friend)

(The cat, EXISTENTIALISME, sleeps on the bed. SHNUFFLE’s movements awake him and he lifts his head.)

(EXISTENTIALISME stretches out his paws and watches SHNUFFLE. Then he freezes, poised to hop off the bed.)

(After the NARRATOR finishes speaking, EXISTENTIALISME jumps off the bed and meanders towards the kitchen on all fours while SHNUFFLE noisily removes things from the cupboard. EXISTENTIALISME curls in a ball underneath the kitchen table.)

(makes two clicking sounds)
Okay Ex-yyyy. Time is for breakfast!

(EXISTENTIALISME comes hurdling into the kitchen.)

Alright alright. Je sais. Oh la.

(SHNUFFLE taps the food onto his plate as EXISTENTIALISME circles him impatiently. SHNUFFLE bends to place it on the floor.)

Bon chat.

(EX gobbles up the food. When he finishes eating and walks back to the bed. He leaps up, spins in a circle a few times and then finally rests in a ball.)

(SHNUFFLE remembers an earlier moment of his life. PRINCESS LALA sits in an audience’s chair. The NARRATOR adds two chairs to the kitchen table. A younger Shnuffle, HENRI, enters and stands, downstage left. EXISTENTIALISME rises from the bed and puts on a hat. He stretches and begins to move like a human.)
(EXISTENTIALISME walks up behind HENRI.)

(hitting Henri on the back, speaking with French accent)
(startles and whirls around to the sound of his name)

(Realizing it is a friend he sighs.)
Ahhh Raphael.

(EXISTENTIALISME pompously raises his head and puffs a circle of smoke in Henri’s face. LALA follows up behind him and seems to be lost in thought.)

Venez. Come on man. They said they’d seat us at the café là-bas.

Ah. O.k.

(HENRI, EX, and LALA walk stage right than back and around the kitchen table in a single line. HENRI follows LALA who follows EX. They sit around an outdoor café table (the kitchen table). EX sits in the middle and fiddles with something on the table, then stands and walks upstage left.)

(leaning upstage and yelling to an imagined waiter indoors)
Aye oh. We are waiting here. Trois pain de chocolats and uhh.. trois café au lait. S’il vous plaît.
(HENRI and LALA begin talking. EXISTENTIALISME is disgusted and clearly disinterested, so he stands and walks over to an imaginary group of girls upstage. He mimes lighting their cigarettes and chatting with them.)
