Full Character Breakdown

Joey Evans: African-American, lyric baritone, low B to high A-Flat vocal range, must be a great dancer and a wonderful fluid tapper, 30-40 years of age. Joey is a talented, handsome and sexually charismatic nightclub singer who is intensely hungry for a wealth and success that always seems just beyond his reach.

Ted Schaire: white, a tenor, low C to falsetto high D, 25-35 years of age, killer piano chops for both show music and jazz style, a mover but not necessarily a dancer. Must have an effortless charm to break the fourth wall and engage an audience. Ted is a talented and troubled alcoholic songwriter/pianist.

Vera Simpson: white, mezzo or second soprano with belt mix, 45 to 55 years of age. Vera is a cougar, a beautiful and prominent Chicago socialite. She is imperious, sexually restless, and dissatisfied with her entitled life. In another time, she'd be running a corporation. Instead, she runs men.

Linda Barlow: African-American, second soprano with good belt mix to at least a D, 25 to 35 years of age, a real looker, and a graceful mover. Linda's a waitress, with an avocation as an artist, innocent but nobody's fool. She's a quick study of human character.

Gladys Love / Ensemble: white Big Belt to "C#", good range, Alto/Mezzo, in her thirties, must dance and tap well. Gladys is a no-nonsense club singer who has been ill-used by men and by life. Ted's best friend.

Val Wondrous / Ensemble: white, Belt to "C" and good range Mix – plus Alto/Soprano range, in her twenties or thirties, must dance and tap well. Val is an ambitious and sexy club singer, who knows how to use her beauty to get what she wants: stardom—or a rich husband.

Trixie Turner / Ensemble: white, Belt and Mix - good range, plus Alto/Soprano range, must dance and tap well. Trixie is a ditzy club singer quite happy in her cluelessness. She generously spreads her favors.

Mike Spears / Ensemble: white, Baritone. in his forties, moves well. Mike is harried and cynical. At one point, he was quite good-looking but he's let himself go.

Joe Armour / Ensemble: white, Tenor/Baritone, thirties or forties, dancer/mover. Joe is a Social Register-type who is one of Vera's escorts, snobby and spoiled.

Cubby Swift / Ensemble: white, Baritone, thirties or forties, dancer/mover. Cubby is another of Vera's Social Register "walkers". A dumb good-time Charley who can't hold his liquor.

Jerry Hill / Robert Wells / Ensemble: African-American, Baritone, thirties, dancer/mover: Jerry works with Linda Barlow in the diner and has a crush on her. Robert Wells is Vera's butler who is dignified, conservative and protective of his patron.
