Monologue

The origins of pasta are very old.
In truth we can find traces of pasta already
among the Etruscans, the Arabs, the Greeks.
Surely it was already known at the time of the Romans,
Back then, however, it had different names.
It is said that Cicero went around talking about làgana,
a Latin word from which comes the current lasagna.

Already in the Middle Ages, in Italy, they had workshops
where they prepared pasta, first in Sicily and then in Napoli, Genova
.... and finally throughout the peninsula.

Pasta is considered an element of shared identity in Italy.
It's an integral part of their popular culture,
not just of their cuisine.

The environments, the phenomena, the atmosphere
that revolve around a pasta dish
have permeated the literature, the music, and then the cinema ...

Italians are not a people, they are a patchwork.
But when the time comes,
sitting in front of a dish of spaghetti,
the inhabitants of the Peninsula
recognize each other as Italias ...

Not even ... the military service,
not even universal suffrage,
exert an equally unifying power.
The Unification of Italy,
dreamed of by the fathers of the Risorgimento,
today is called "pasta".
