The First Scene - The Inciting Incident

1. INT. MARGE`S AND PEDRO`S APARTMENT - DINIG ROOM/KITCHEN. DAY

MARGE (70) sits alone on her dining table. She is all in black (robe and dress) resembling a sinister shadowy silhouette against the closed curtained set of windows to her back. A lone candle burns on the middle of the table; some faint luminosity pour through slits on the shut windows revealing it`s day time. Objects which can be seen are poorly lit: jars, plates with prayer inscriptions, images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, a family portrait in which Marge is seen with her daughter Dahlia and her grandson PEDRO (18).
Marge is having tea as she hears Pedro and the kid WILLIAM (20) playing guitar in Pedro`s bedroom. Marge looks up at the picture of the Last Supper. //1

MARGE
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. //2
Marge turns her head towards the closed door of Pedro`s bedroom. //3 After a misplay on the guitar the volume goes too high leading Marge to slam her cup on the saucer. //4 Then the music stops and Marge squints as she hears the kids muttering. //5 She sees Pedro emerge on the dining room followed by William, who has his bass guitar strapped across his back. //6 As they walk by the edge of the room towards the exit door, William halts and waves at Marge. //7 Pedro halts and turns to look at William. //8
WILLIAM
Stay safe Mrs. Van Baum. //9
Marge only tracks the boy`s movement slightly turning her head. //10 William smiles at her. //11 William looks down and away. //12 Marge sees William arrive at the door where Pedro is waiting. //13
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
See you in a bit. Don`t be late bro. //14
PEDRO
Yeah. //15
Marge sees the boys hugging each other. //16 William then turns and smiles at Marge from over his shoulder. //17 William winks with both eyes and turns away. //18 Marge squints. //19 Pedro opens the door and William steps outside the apartment. //20 Marge sees Pedro walking back to his room. //21
MARGE
I don`t want you bringing strangers
inside the house. //22
Pedro halts in place looking down. //23 Pedro begins walking again. //24
MARGE (CONT’D)
Are you listening Pedro? //25
Pedro halts another time, still keeping his head down. //26
PEDRO
Yes grandmother. //27
MARGE
Look at me.//28
Pedro looks the other way. //29
MARGE (CONT’D)
Look at me when I talk to you. //30
Pedro reluctantly turns to face Marge. //31
MARGE (CONT’D)
You seem to forget your manners. Your mother would disapprove of your behavior. //32
PEDRO
Is that all? //33
Marge sighs. //34
MARGE
I won`t have you sauntering around, wasting your time with this losers. It`s past time you got married Pedro. It`s past time you found a
real job and forgot this nonsense of playing music… //35
PEDRO
Is that all Marge? I am late. //36
Marge stares at Pedro with the corner of her eyes. //37
MARGE
Clear my tea. I am done. //38
Pedro sighs. //39
PEDRO
Of course. //40
Pedro approaches his grandmother on her left side and collects her tea cup with his right hand keeping his left hand folded on his back, his body straight. //41 Marge grabs Pedro`s arm. //42
MARGE
Enlighten me Pedro. What exactly are you late for? //43
Pedro stares down at his grandmother. //44
PEDRO
My concert. //45
They both stare into each other`s eyes. Marge releases her grip on Pedro`s arm. //46 Pedro turns on himself and walks towards the adjacent kitchen. //47 Pedro strikes the kitchen`s light which pours wildly into the dining room forcing Marge to look away. //48 Pedro begins washing the cups on the sink. //49 Marge starts murmuring words to herself but then her voice grows louder. //50

MARGE
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me! You insolent child… You incorrigible child! Ruining your life just like you ruined your mother`s! Shame on you! Shame on you for you have sinned! //51
Pedro drops the tea cup on the sink. It breaks and produces a loud sound. //52
PEDRO
I ruined her life? Me? I was on the other side! She was waiting for you! YOU ruined her life with your crazy shit about God and rules and…
Cruelty. You never allowed her to be happy! //53
MARGE
Shut your mouth! //54
PEDRO
What did faith do for you? What did Jesus do for you? What all this years of religion crap helped you with? //55
MARGE
YOU will be judged! //56
PEDRO
Nothing! Jesus doesn`t give a shit Marge! SHE IS DEAD! And nothing you did mattered. It never MATTERED. And SHE was good… Much better than you! To put up with your shit. You are crazy! I am better than you! You don`t give a shit about me. //57
MARGE
Pedro! //58

The doorbell rings. Pedro and Marge stare at each other. //59 Pedro squints at her. //60 Pedro turns and walks towards the door. //61 Pedro opens the door. //62
CARTER
Pedro. //63
PEDRO
Oh. Hello stranger. //64
Pedro recognizes the man at the door as CARTER (60), who is wearing a white shirt under a blue suspensory, light brown pants, eyeglasses and a chaplet around his neck. Carter smile disappears and he frowns as Pedro turns his back on him. //65 Pedro gives Marge a freezing look as he walks past the dining-room towards his bedroom. //66 Marge retreats on her chair. //67 Carter enters the apartment and approaches Marge`s position. //68 They stare into each other`s eyes. //69 Their heads turn as loud noises coming from Pedro`s bedroom reach their ears. //70 Marge stares at the family picture of Dahlia and Pedro. //71 After a few moments Pedro reappears in the dining room with his guitar strapped to his back and carrying a suitcase. //72
PEDRO (HOLDING UP TEARS) (CONT’D)
You never leave the house… You don`t see daylight no more. Can`t you see? //73
Marge looks down at the suitcase Pedro`s carrying. //74 Carter has his hands folded upon his waist; he barely raises his eyes to look at Pedro and keeps his head low. //75
PEDRO (HOLDING UP TEARS) (CONT’D)
This is important to me grandmother. But you don`t know. You know nothing about me… //76
MARGE
Pedro. You are scaring me. //77
Pedro looks down shaking his head. //78
PEDRO
I took a job Marge. At a paper factory... Just like you told me to. But not here... //79
Pedro takes his keys out of his pocket and places it over the table. //80
PEDRO (CONT’D)
After the show tonight, I am moving back to Chicago. //81
Pedro walks away towards the apartment`s door. //82
MARGE
Pedro?! //83
Pedro halts. //84 Pedro turns to face Marge. //85 Marge stares at him but says nothing. //86 Pedro shake his head. //87
PEDRO
What? //88
MARGE
Wait. //89
Pedro shake his head. //90
PEDRO
I quit music school. There is nothing for me here anymore. //91
(Silence) //92
Pedro looks down and laughs in disbelief. //93
PEDRO (CONT’D)
I have to work Marge. Thank you for making this so easy. Goodbye. //94
Pedro leaves the apartment. //95 Marge looks down. //96 Carter looks at Marge. //97 Carter sits next to her. //98 Carter looks down and closes his eyes. //99 Carter opens his eyes and reaches for Marge`s hand. //100
CARTER
This is a wake up call Marge. It`s a sign. //101
MARGE
He abandoned me. //102
CARTER
No. No. He is grieving. You both are. And you must get him back. God wants you to get him back. //103
MARGE
God? Where is God? I don`t know anymore... //104
Marge lowers her head. Carter looks at the image of Christ on the wall. //105
CARTER
My thoughts are not your thoughts. Neither are your ways my ways. Lean not in your own understanding, but trust in the LORD. //106
MARGE
I don`t see it... //107
CARTER
Forgive Pedro. Go to his show. He talks about it all the time. He misses you Marge. //108
MARGE
I don`t see it... //109
Carter taps Marge`s hand. //110
CARTER
You will... He is right here Marge. Reach for him. Let him in. //111
Marge looks down at the table and covers her face with her hands. //112
