Role Description

Isabel Haverstick: (Supporting) an ex-student nurse (she fainted at the sight of blood and was fired) and unconsummated newlywed who attended George, at a VA hospital in St. Louis; from Texas, with attendant gentility and drawl; amazed and dismayed that her new husband has barely spoken a word to her since their wedding less than 48 hours earlier, that their wedding vehicle was a ’52 black Cadillac hearse and that they spent their wedding night in a ramshackle hotel, he on the bed and she on a chair; takes great comfort in the “cozy little home” Dorthea has built for George and longs for the appearance of a “normal” marriage but she will not find one here. She spends much of the play fighting for an elusive logic to explain the apparently doomed life into which she has subscribed herself; by play’s end, however, she and George do find their way into each other’s hearts; not without her pearls of naïve wisdom which help to heal the rift between Ralph and Dorthea.
