Long Beach Opera/Chicago Opera Theatre
Darlene M, production dir.; Ken Roht, dir./chroeo.

Production Description

Casting Duke Ellington’s only opera and one of his fairly unknown and rarely performed works, "Queenie Pie," which blends big-band sound and clever lyrics with the musical styles of opera, jazz, and musical theater. It is the story of a Harlem belle who finds an elixir of “everylasting anythingness” in her pursuit of straight hair and a crown. Inspired by the life of Mme C.J. Walker (hair product mogul and this country’s first female African-American self-made millionaire), social status, beauty, and racial divides are redefined in Ellington’s raucous affair.
