Production Description

Casting "Sheila's Day" (Ricardo Khan, adapted/dir.; Thuli Dumakude, vocal instruction Rehearsals begin April 7; runs on or about April 28-May 23) and "Autumn's Harvest" (Dominique Morriseau, written by; Jade King Carroll, dir. Workshop April 14-18; rehearsals begin June 16; runs on or about July 7-July 11 with possible extension into following week).

MARY RUBY LEE THOMAS JOHNSON
African American female from Marion, Alabama. A domestic at least in her 40’s. A presence to be reckoned with but with a vulnerable side too. Raised mostly by her grandmother because her mother was also a sleep-in domestic. Comes from a tradition of churchgoers--holiness. She’s strong in spirit, a survivor with a flair for the comic and a strong gospel voice. A skilled and passionate storyteller, often humorous, always entertaining.

QEDUSIZI MAPHALALA
Black female from Soweto Township, South Africa. A domestic at least in her 40’s. A strong singer from a Zulu tradition. A dancer in that same tradition as well. She has dreams of becoming a teacher, loves children and is respectful of family and traditions. A skilled and passionate storyteller, strong-spirited with a vulnerable side as well.

TU:
South African female, 20’s- 30’s. A member of the ensemble of four women who plays several roles in the telling of Qedusizi’s and Ruby Lee’s stories. So she must be able to play roles in both the African American as well as South African worlds. Must have a strong singing voice and be able to dance or at least move very well, and to work in an ensemble environment. Tu also plays the guitar.

ANNELEN:
South African female, 30’s- 40’s. A member of the ensemble of four women who plays several roles in the telling of Qedusizi’s and Ruby Lee’s stories. So she must be able to play roles in both the African American as well as South African worlds. Must have a strong singing voice and be able to dance or at least move very well, and to work in an ensemble environment.

STEPHANIE:
African American female 30’s-40’s. A member of the ensemble of four women who plays several roles in the telling of Qedusizi’s and Ruby Lee’s stories. So she must be able to play roles in both the African American as well as South African worlds. Must have a strong singing voice and be able to dance or at least move very well, and to work in an ensemble environment. Playing the guitar is helpful.

TORRES:
Latina female 20’s-30’s. A member of the ensemble of four women who plays several roles in the telling of Qedusizi’s and Ruby Lee’s stories. So she must be able to play roles in both the African American as well as South African worlds. Must have a strong singing voice and be able to dance or at least move very well, and to work in an ensemble environment.

LADY SOUL
Black woman. Late 30's to late 40's. Somewhat of an oracle. Should have a wisdom and weight to her. Almost a poet.

JONES
Black man, working class, 30's, urban, tough. A loving father and widower, trying to figure out how to be a single dad

AUTUMN
Black girl, 12 - 15 years old, figuring out her place in this world. Determined, thoughtful, a little sassy. A leader. (NOTE: Actor must be 18+ years of age to play 12-15)

KHADEEM
Black boy, 12 - 15 years old. Autumn’s best friend. Street-savvy, smart, funny. (NOTE: Actor must be 18+ years of age, to play 12-15.)
