1. Posture and Mannerisms
Make yourself as big as possible. Don’t be afraid of pushing out your stomach to increase your physical presence.
To give yourself an appearance of being “in charge” (which you should appear to be at all times), your nose and chin should be slightly raised, allowing you to lower your eyes sternly towards people from a position of authority. You should not however be condescending. You are stern, but kind.
Hands should not linger in trouser pockets. Any hand movements should be executed with absolute precision and a suggestion of flair.
Walk slowly (i.e. at your own speed), and try ensure that people make way for you, rather than the other way round.
2: Voice and Accent
Before speaking in public, and in order to attract attention to yourself, you may choose to clear your throat loudly with a short, sharp cough.
Your voice should be deep and rich (reach down into that ample tummy of yours).
Sir Topham Hatt’s accent need not always be the same, but the “way he speaks” should always reflect the character of a man in authority. We do not recommend a fake British accent, but you should use British phrases and vocabulary.
You should therefore always speak slowly and clearly – much like a headmaster at morning assembly in school.
The voice should always be slightly raised in volume, to ensure that you can be heard by everyone around you (although be careful when standing close to very young children, as they may be a little scared of you.)
