Straitjacket Society Sketch Comedy
Straitjacket Society Creative Team

Production Description

Seeking comics and directors for the Straitjacket Society. Founded in 2005, Straitjacket Society is a sketch comedy repertory theater company based in Hollywood, CA. SJS creates sketch shows from scratch for an eight-week run in front of a live audience. Rehearsals are once a week on stage. Each show runs approx. 50-60 minutes, and performs once a week. There is a four-six week pre-production writing/rehearsal process ending with a tech week leading up to the opening show.

Company states: "We encourage cross show promotion in order to bring in new SJS fans and, more importantly, industry guests to benefit our actors. Straitjacket Society doesn't teach classes like other Hollywood schools. SJS membership is mostly comprised of actors who cross-train, study all over town, and consider themselves students of Sketch and Improv. SJS is a hybrid training environment that is different from a typical class environment; we encourage 'learning on the job' by actually performing on stage weekly in front of a live audience. SJS feels the most valuable way to learn sketch is to get up on your feet and under the lights rather than sitting in seats listening to a teacher. There is no substitution for on-the-job experience. We carefully select our prospects, design a well-rounded cast, and assign an experienced SJS director in order to ensure a quality production and maximize growth potential."

Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations

Rehearsals start Mid August and go for six weeks, leading into an eight-week fall run; exact times TBD. SJS Theatre is located on Theatre Row on Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, CA. There is a rolling submission process for individuals interested beyond the fall start date.

Compensation & Union Contract Details

Fees required. Company states: "We do 'pay to play' monthly dues but you actually get up and play and learn from all the veterans around you. This will offer you multiple perspectives rather than learning from just one individual, and it's much cheaper. Unlike some other venues, the actors don't run exercises for 12 weeks and have one graduation show at the end."
