38th annual Sterling Renaissance Festival

Thousands of repeat and new visitors will travel to Sterling, New York this summer, to see one of the most unique and refreshing outdoor festivals anywhere in the world. The 38th annual Sterling Renaissance Festival is a whimsical recreation of an Elizabethan town at festival time. It features a wide variety of music, dance, and song from Elizabethan England, and astounding feats of swordplay, comedy and magic. It also has townspeople, who are as endearing as they are mad, and have an uncanny knack for drawing you in to their spontaneous antics.

The whole town is alive with events, improvisations, scenarios, lane performances, stage acts, Shakespeare plays and concerts. Everywhere you look there is something to capture your imagination, please the eye, quench your thirst and fill your appetite. In fact, there is so much spontaneous interaction, from the zany to the sublime, that each visit to the festival yields a completely different experience.

From the moment you step through the gates of the Sterling Renaissance Festival, the pressures and reminders of the 21st century life vanish into the cool wooded landscape, and the transition to the year 1585 and to the place of Warwick, England begins. Visitors enter a Renaissance world of discovery and adventure, a place of pleasure, creativity and enchantment.

To create this illusion, a company of professional entertainers cast from a national audition tour and rehearsed for weeks before opening, invents a zany cross-section of characters from lords, ladies, beggars, wenches, minstrels and even Queen Elizabeth herself. While remaining true to their characters in dress, mannerism and dialect, the talented troupe provides over 100 stage acts and street performances daily.

More than eighty highly skilled, full-time artisans and craftsmen are chosen by a jury committee to practice and display their wares at the Festival. Selections are made based upon the quality of products and relevance to the Elizabethan time period. “We are very careful in selecting artisans,” said Garry Izzo, Creative Director at the Sterling Renaissance Festival. “We want to ensure that visitors have a unique and satisfying shopping experience.”

Selected artisans display their works in decorative booths throughout the 35 acre village of Warwickshire—many provide demonstrations of techniques used in the crafting of their wares. All pieces are designed and handcrafted by the artisan themselves who are present throughout the entire Festival season.

Though some folks travel to Sterling, NY for the Festival’s renowned entertainment, the fine arts and handcrafts, and the experience of a truly remarkable Renaissance theme festival, some folks come to taste the new sensations whose aroma fill the air throughout the Festival. The Renaissance inspired cooks are sure to tempt any palate with hearty main dishes, succulent deserts, and a large variety of drinks, ales and wine.

The Sterling Renaissance Festival, presented by Empire Attractions, is located at the Sterling Festival Grounds in Sterling, NY, just 45 minutes north of Syracuse and just west of Oswego.
