Production Description

Casting Maurice Maeterlinck's "The Blind," a great symbolist play set in a world of waiting, hoping, and death. A second year MFA Theater Directing Project at Columbia University. Production states: "The focus will be on creating a semi-immersive piece of theater emphasizing other senses besides sight. 'The Blind' is set in a forest on an island. A group of blind, mostly older men and women (they are all from a sanatorium-type home that is on the island) have been led into the forest by a priest who takes care of them. The priest has disappeared, and the blind are left on their own in a strange forest. Slowly they realize that their guide has in fact passed away in their midst, and that they are lost. The play is an incredibly beautiful piece of text evoking the senses, and creating a fresco of loneliness, hope(lessness), and sounds."
