The Invisible Wound

Jake turns around. Sees --
Madison. She's hanging out on her porch. Reading a magazine.
She takes earbuds out.
MADISON
I'm sorry if it was, you know,
awkward the other night.
Jake deposits his trash in the dumpster.
MADISON (cont'd)
It's not like I meant to eavesdrop or
anything. This is just kinda where I
like to hang-out sometimes.
JAKE
Nah. It's fine.
MADISON
Okay. Cool.
JAKE
See ya.
Madison waves as Jake walks by her.
MADISON
Hey, so what do you do all day?
JAKE
What's that?
MADISON
I mean, we've been neighbors for like
a month now, and I don't really see
you go out too much.

Jake looks back at her. For some reason he reacts
unreasonably angry.
JAKE
Why is that any of your business? You
think it's okay to keep tabs on what
I'm up to?
Madison doesn't know how to react.
MADISON
I'm just trying to be --
neighborly... ask what you do for
work.
Jake doesn't know where that came from.
JAKE
Look, just --
Jake doesn't even bother finishing. Walks away.
INT. JAKE'S APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER
Jake walks into his apartment. He's upset. Frustrated. Why?
He thinks for a moment. Then he heads back to the front
door. Opens it.
Before he can step out -- Madison's right there.
MADISON
Oh, shit. You scared me.
JAKE
What are you --
MADISON
I'm sorry. It's none of my business.
JAKE
Look, I don't know why I reacted like
that.
MADISON
You're a veteran, right?
JAKE
Yeah. Why?

MADISON
Cause, I don't know. If you're
looking for a job -- I know of a bank
that's hiring and they like veterans.

MADISON
Just thought I'd... you know, share
that bit of... info.
(quickly)
I'm Madison, by the way.
