Role Description

Singer-Actors:

Roles

GIDEON FLETCHER
Male, 30s. Leading man. Charismatic, charming, cynical, worldly-wise; quick to buy a round or throw a fist, slow to open his heart. Grew up around the shipyards of Newcastle, got out as soon as he could. He’s coming home to come to terms with his family, his history, and his future. Gideon has his share of demons, but a romantic at heart. Strong tenor, rock/folk/legit. PRINCIPAL

MEG DAWSON
Female, 30s. Gideon’s ex, though she’d never define herself that way. Tough, funny, and beautiful. A single mom, she’s resourceful, determined, and unsentimental. Has lived her life around the shipyards, and can hold her own with anyone. Meg would do anything for to protect her son. Pop-lyric soprano. PRINCIPAL

FATHER JAMES O’BRIEN
Male, 60s – 70s. Irish Catholic, in the old-school way. Parish priest but also, unofficially, the chaplain of the shipyard and the shepherd to the men who work there. By turns a comedian, a confessor, a charmer, and prophet. Known to have a pint every now and then. Baritone with range and depth. PRINCIPAL

ARTHUR MILLBURN
Male, 30s. Meg’s fiancée. Former shipyard welder, now working for the Newlands Corporation. He made his way out the yards while many of his old friends didn’t, about which there’s some guilt. Handsome, confident, and kind. He wants nothing more than to make a safe home for Meg and Tom. Bari-tenor. PRINCIPAL

JACKIE WHITE
Male, 50s. Foreman of a Newcastle shipyard. Brooks no nonsense, but enjoys his fun. A leader of men, a seasoned hand, and a genial wit on the job; and, after hours, informal master of ceremonies at the pub. Can take a firm hand when the situation requires it. Bari-tenor with wide range. PRINCIPAL

PEGGY WHITE
Female, 50s. The nurse of the shipyard, every bit as weathered, durable, and bawdy as the boys, but has a heart as big as Newscastle. Jackie White’s common-law wife. Meaty, strong alto. PRINCIPAL

TOM DAWSON/YOUNG GIDEON
Male, 14 – 16. Tom is Meg’s son. He’s an imaginative, clever boy with dreams and a yearning to follow them; looking for his place in the world. The actor doubles as Young Gideon. Rock/folk/legit tenor. PRINCIPAL

The following roles may or may not be determined as chorus parts, but will be auditioned at these EPAs:

YOUNG MEG DAWSON
Female, 14 – 16. Vivacious and pretty. Her own woman from a young age. Strong mix.

The shipyard crew and interested parties:

ADRIAN SANDERS
Male, 30s – 50s. Shipyard worker and self-styled intellectual. The bard of the yard. Baritone.

BILLY THOMPSON
Male, 30s – 40s. Shipyard shop steward, union firebrand, and resident social agitator. Probably short and muscular, definitely fiery, intense, and fearless. Tenor.

DAVY HARRISON
Male, 30s. Goodhearted and headstrong shipyard worker. Enjoys a drink and has a temper. An old pal of Gideon’s. Tenor.

FREDDY NEWLANDS
Male, 50s – 60s. Owner of the Newlands Corporation, in the process of taking over the yard. Rich. An antagonist, not a villain.

MRS. BEATRICE DEES
Female, 40s – 50s. Proprietor and works behind the bar at the local pub. Seen it all, still amused by most of it. Puts up with no shenanigans at her establishment. Alto.

JESSIE FLYNN
Female, 20s. Works the tables at the pub. Attractive and experienced. Soprano
