Role Description

Sam: (Lead) Sam is alone for the duration of the story. While she shows little emotion, we can tell she is not happy. She drives a Jeep to a primitive fishing camp next to a lake on top of a mountain. She attempts, with little success, to teach herself to fly fish. When she's not fishing, she's engaged in the activities one engages in at a primitive mountain camp: building a new roof on a shed, making fire, heating canned meals, sunbathing on the dock, walking in the woods, canoeing, and swimming. While this is not Sam's natural habitat, she courageously tries to make it her own.
As days pass, we come to learn that Sam is mourning a loss, that the fishing gear she uses belonged to a loved one, that the shed she's working on is a project he left unfinished, that the cabin she's living in was his. Eventually the emotional weight of this place and the circumstances get the better of Sam, and she breaks down. The action she takes at the climax will define her character for the rest of her life.

A few notes:

I guess that role description is more of a synopsis. Writing a character description was a challenge because frankly, the audience shouldn't know much about this character until the end of the story and I didn't want to spoil it.

She rarely speaks. When she does, it's to herself, which so often happens when individuals spend time alone without other human interaction.

The age range is broad because the actor is more important than the character's age.

Some things I can say about you and the role:

You should be athletic. You will have to cast a fly with a fly rod. You will have to walk through the woods. You will have to dive into a cold lake from a rock 10 feet above its surface. You will have to straddle a roof beam 10 feet of the ground and pound a nail. You must be able to drive a manual transmission. While you don't necessarily have to be adept at any of the above (as it's the character's first time doing most of these things), you must make the audience believe that the character is the kind of person who would risk failure to try them.

The role will be emotionally exhausting. In lieu of dialogue and other characters to interact with, Sam's pain will be displayed on her face. Her frustrations as she fails must be conveyed wordlessly.

We will be living primitively during the days of filming. You, me, a cameraman, and possibly a sound person at my off-the-grid fishing camp in the Adirondack mountains. You should be okay with that.

You should be okay with nudity. It's by no means gratuitous, but there is a scene in which the character sunbathes naked on a raft in the middle of the lake.

You should be okay wearing very little or no makeup. It's not realistic given that the character is alone on top of a mountain.

You should know that I am very collaborative. I look forward to exploring this character with you in the time leading up to production and revising based on what your sensibility brings to the story and character.

So, if all that sounds good to you, send me a note and a photo. I'm hoping to choose a select group of 3-4 actresses to meet with for an informal "audition" so we can discuss the role.

A little about me: I'm a commercial director, ex commercial producer, taking time off from commercial work to get back into narrative writing and directing. This will be my first narrative short in several years. If you want to see some of my work:
