Production Description

Casting "The Show." Synopsis: Percy King is a very talented musician who aspires to be a great band director. Upon his graduation from college, he happens upon an opportunity that will change the landscape of high school marching band in the state of North Carolina forever. After having very early success, he meets Ashley (Cupcake), a transfer student who forces her way into the performing group with her dancing ability and will challenge his capacity to make sound judgments concerning his morals, his current relationship and ultimately his career. It’s a story about man’s constant strive for perfection and his constant inability to achieve it and sheds light on a community of often misunderstood strangers that act as a family, even in the darkest of times, and shows you why no matter what, the show, much like life must always go on.

INT.-MR. KING'S OFFICE-MOMENTS LATER
There is a knock on Mr. King's office door. Without looking up to see who it is, he answers.

MR. KING
Come on in.

The door swings open and the girl stands there, leaning against the inside of the door frame holding her books to her chest.
Mr. King notices that no one has approached his desk yet, and looks up from what he is doing.

MR. KING
Yes ma'am?

Cupcake looks at Mr. King and it seems she is immediately impressed with his appearance. She looks down at the floor for a moment and clears her throat before preparing to answer him.

CUPCAKE
Um. Yeah, my name is Ashley Hilfiger, but people call me Cupcake...

She pauses again.

Mr. King looks at her, trying to figure out what she is doing in his office.

MR. KING
Okay, well, I seriously doubt that I will be calling you Cupcake, but what exactly can I do for you, Ms. Hilfiger?

CUPCAKE
Well, I just moved here from California. I'm a Senior, but I’m already eighteen.

MR. KING
(In a condescending tone) An eighteen year-old Senior…in September. How did you manage that?

CUPCAKE
I move around a lot. (beat) Anyway, they told me in the office that I had to pick an elective and most of the other classes were full so...

Cupcake hands him her schedule.

Mr. King looks down at it, makes a crazy face and chuckles to himself.

MR. KING
(smiling sarcastically) ...so they put you in a Band Class.

CUPCAKE
(in a shy fashion with meek eye contact) Yeah.

MR. KING
Okay, well let me ask, even though I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this question: Do you play an instrument?

CUPCAKE
(a bit embarrassed) No.

MR. KING
(out loud to himself) Of course not, cause that would make too much sense.

MR. KING
(to Ashley) Well, I am not quite sure what to do with you. Maybe you can be on Task Squad or something...

CUPCAKE
What's that?

MR. KING
You just help pass out Gatorade, move things, collect jackets and bags from the Flags and Dancers...

CUPCAKE
Dancers?

Mr. King looks at her sideways again and smirks.

MR. KING
Yes, dancers.

CUPCAKE
I can do that.

MR. KING
Wait, you didn't let me finish...

CUPCAKE
No, I'm saying I can do that.

MR. KING
(losing patience) Do what?

CUPCAKE
Dance.

Mr. King slowly sits down as he continues to look at Cupcake as though she is not quite sure what she is saying. He motions her to sit down.

MR. KING
Have a seat sweetie. Have you ever seen a black band before?

CUPCAKE
No.

MR. KING
Okay, I think you may be confused about what I mean when I say dance.

CUPCAKE
It doesn't matter. I can do it. I can really dance.

MR. KING
You can dance.

CUPCAKE
I can dance.

MR. KING
This is not club dancing, this is dance dancing, no bullshit, excuse my French. I'm not talking about shuffling or raving...

Cupcake leans forward towards the desk and has a look of determination and sheer sincerity on her face.

CUPCAKE
Mr. King, is it?

MR. KING
(a little more irritated)Yes ma'am.

CUPCAKE
I can dance, in fact, I'll dance rings around whoever you've already got.

MR. KING
(surprised) Wow. Is that right?

CUPCAKE
(confidently) I mean, it is what it is.

MR. KING
Okay Ms. Hilfiger, I tell you what. Make sure you have a change of clothes this afternoon by 3. You seem to think you're the second coming of Honey Daniels, so we gon' find out...today, though. If you don't tryout today, then Task Squad it is, and I don’t wanna hear another word about it… deal?

CUPCAKE
Yes.

Mr. King
Yes, Sir.

Cupcake smirks in response.

CUPCAKE
(in a patronizing fashion) Yes, Sir.

At that moment, the bell rings and it's time for lunch.

CUPCAKE
Well, I think that's my lunch bell. See ya at 3.

Cupcake gets up and walks out of the office.
