Full Character Breakdown

Mrs. Phelps: 55 - 70 years old, THIS ROLE WILL BE PLAYED BY A MALE ACTOR. Adorably plump and charming, flighty and high strung with a talent for drawing attention to herself. On the surface, she is all sweetness and refinement, the Victorian ideal of the self-sacrificing mother; underneath, she is ruthlessly manipulative and conniving with a will of iron and a razor sharp tongue. A "wolf in sheeps' clothing."

David Phelps: early 30s, tall and solidly built, robustly masculine but still a gentleman of the period. There's is a dullness about him, a lack of imagination and self-consciousness, an absolutely conventional, businessman-type, "steady," the opposite of self-dramatizing.

Christina Phelps: early 30s, David's wife of just a few weeks, fiercely intelligent and independent for a woman of the 1920's. She is a scientist with a cool, composed, highly rational demeanor. Feminine and attractive, what's most important is her self-confidence, her poise, articulateness and highly developed intellect.

Robert Phelps: 20s, very handsome but with more delicate, refined features than David, slender and sensitive, with an underlying neuroticism that makes him prone to emotional outbursts and "scenes."

Hester: early 20s, Robert's girlfriend, an ex-dancer, very pretty and graceful, vulnerable and sensitive, with a high strung, impetuous, wildly emotional temperament. She should look like a "flapper" of the period, flamboyant and romantic.
