Production Description

Casting Marriot Theatre's 2015 season. Season includes "La Cage Aux Folles" (Rehearsals begin Jan. 12; runs Jan. 28-Mar. 29), "Anything Goes" (Rehearsals begin Mar. 23; runs Apr. 8-June 7), "City of Angels" (Rehearsals begin May 25; runs June 10-Aug. 9), "October Sky" (Rehearsals begin July 27; runs Aug. 19-Oct. 18), "The Wizard of Oz" (Rehearsals begin Oct. 27; runs Nov. 7-Jan. 3).

"October Sky"

Principal Roles

Homer Hickam (age 16-18) father works in the coal mine. Homer is fascinated by Sputnik and decides to create his own rockets. He quickly realizes this could be his ticket of working in the mine.

John Hickam - (late forties- early fifties) Homer's father. Comes from a long line of miners. He is the superintendent of the Coalwood mine. Tough, hard working man. Takes great pride in the mine. Doesn’t understand Homer's fascination with rockets.

Elsie Hickam - (late forties-early fifties) Homer and Jim's mother, wife to John. She is a strong woman who respects and loves her husband, but when pushed, she pushes back. She see’s Homer as a dreamer and drifter who needs her help to get to college and not in the mine.

Miss Riley - (thirties) One of Homer’s teachers who takes interest in his ambition to create rockets. She helps encourage Homer and his friends to enter their rockets into the local science fair.

Roy Lee - (age 16-18) Homer’s friend since childhood. A slick, good looking kid. A bit of an outsider. Father was killed in the mine and his step father is an abusive drunk. Helps Homer build rockets.

O’Dell - (age 16-18) Homer’s friend since childhood. A smaller kid weakened by polio. His left legs is smaller than the right but he never complains about it. Helps Homer build rockets.

Quentin - (age 16-18) smart kid who lives in poverty onside of town. He is made fun of at school, but Homer brings him onboard to help develop the rockets. A strong friendship is formed between the four boys.

Supporting Characters

Ken Dubonnet - (late forties-early fifties) union rep at the mine. Went to High School with John and Elsie. John and Ken represent opposite sides at the mine; the Company and the miners union. Ken supports and likes Homer.

Ike Bykovski - (fifties) polish metal shop worker who helps Homer and the boys weld and create the rockets.

Mr Turner - (age 50-60) high school principal. A stern man who sees his goal as peeping the boys of Coalwood to enter the mine and girls to marry a miner.

Dorothy Platt - (age 16-18) girl at school who Homer has a huge crush on.

Emily Sue - (age 16-18) girl at school who’s friends with Dorothy and constantly flirting with Roy Lee.

Jim Hickam - (age 17-19) Homer's older brother. He’s a high school football star who gets a scholarship to play ball in college. He constantly picks on Homer.
