Sample Narration

5 months after his father's suicide, Ollie Sway decided to return one last time to the lake that bore his name. Though he had not spoken to his father for a year before he died, Ollie remembered hearing that a valuable phonograph record was in the house. He felt that an item worth 200,000 dollars was acceptable payback from a family that had brought him so much pain. He was happy to have a Russian as his ally in this adventure. It fit his sense of the march of history, and though Ollie didn’t know him well, Nikolai was already like a brother. Both were orphans. Both believed the modern world was vulgar. And both believed that stealing was moral when it was necessary. Though Ollie couldn’t remember his mother’s funeral, he’d made the decision to skip his father’s, knowing that his grandmother would hijack the event for sympathy speeches. He knew that his father only wanted one thing, and that was to hear music with soul.

Letter V/O

“May 12 1943. Dearest Charlie, The greatest day in Eskimo History approaches. Far be it for me to judge whether you are the most lovely girl on the island, or whether our passion is bold enough for a song. I know by now that in love, as in war, we judge our allies best by the secrets they keep. You are a keeper of secrets, Charlie. But one day our family will be gone from the lake and no one will remember why it’s called Sway. Don’t worry, the great powers always rise and always fall. Please remember just as the thirsty crave water so does water crave the thirsty. Forgive me Charlie, even if songs are all I know, and I haven’t loved our son well enough yet. Forgive us both. Your devoted Commander, Hal Sway.”
