Lena walks back into the kitchen, not caring to stop the door from making a noise. She busies herself around the kitchen then takes out a basket filled with soft toys, washable kinds, and puts them into the soapy sudsy water that she’s filled the sink with me.
Mrs. Holiday watches, with little reaction.
You don’t need to bother with those crazy things on your last morning. I can send them out somewhere.
I can’t washing for no reason but for her. I washed these things ever since I was here and I’ll wash them before I leave . The lady only knows what kind of strong disinfectant and mess they put in the water when they wash these things in them laundries. And half the time she sticks ‘em in her mouth at night the way she did when she was a baby. (Lifting another toy in disgust). Look at this rascal. Look just like he been crawling round in the coal room.
You really told her goodbye?
I ‘spect we understood each other.
She’s become so awfully attached.
She’’ get over that. They always do. Part of growing up.
I called them catering people again ‘bout the orders for the party Saturday night. Whether they ever gets here is something else. You better check on ‘em.
