Sarah - Sides

Frank sits down by some trees and pulls out a young adult book.
Sarah walks up, she is hiding something behind her back.
Your head in a book again, why am I not surprised?
You should try this one Sarah, it’s a fun one.
Oh yeah, maybe, would you like a surprise first?
Hmmm... maybe. But someone might see.
You are so bad Frank. You wish. Here, I snuck this out, an extra piece that was left over.
Sarah pulls from her back a piece of custard pie. Frank puts his book down and grabs the plate.
Custard pie. My favorite!
Frank starts devouring the pie. Sarah is all smiles.
How could I forget? Every time we have it for a meal you can’t stop telling everyone how much you love it. We were making them for dinner and we had some left over, so I thought you wouldn’t mind getting some a little early.
Frank nods and smiles.
So, what’s the book about?
Well, it’s a space sci-fi adventure book. It takes place in the far future and humans are exploring planets and meeting aliens.
That must be hard to enjoy.
Well, we know that's not going to happen! There won't be spaceships and ray guns... the Dark Ones will return and we will help them rule this world.
Frank stops eating and puts the plate down.
Sarah... I’ve been thinking. What if they are wrong? What if we aren’t special and there are no Dark Ones?
We talked about this Frank. We have to have faith. The time is coming, soon. I have... had my doubts at times too, but I know it’s true, deep down.
Frank is about to say something, but Sarah cuts him off.
I know you read these books and sometimes they have kids with families and you want that, but that wasn’t how we were raised. It isn’t our fate. I know you’ve wanted to leave us for years now...
Not you Sarah, I don’t want to leave you. I don’t know which thing keeps me here more, being afraid of what is out there or losing you. What if we’re fooling ourselves? Just looking for a way to be special? Maybe none of it is true and the world isn’t going to end.
Sarah looks away deep in thought. There is an awkward silence, then suddenly a bell rings.
We should get back.
She walks off and Frank starts to follow.
(glancing back with a grin)
Don’t forget to finish your pie.
Frank grins and snatches it up, finishing it off as he runs to catch up with her.
