Role Description

Jo: (Lead) Jo is Pip’s mother. She and Pip both share the same apartment in the brownstone building her husband owns in Brooklyn. Jo has a kind face, but often looks haggard and a little misplaced after working such long hours. She wears simple, inexpensive clothes when she’s at home, but dons an apron and pins her hair up when she is at work at the local diner. Jo struggles to be “the mom” that she wants to be for Pip, while taking care of the house, and sheltering Pip from the reality of the outside world. Her busy life has distanced herself from her son, and she struggles to fill the gaps left by Pip’s father. While Jo loves her son, they have many differences, and she has never been able to truly connect with him the way that his father did. Still, she does what she needs to get by, and take care of herself and Pip, while maintaining his childhood delusions.
Jo fills the gaps in her life with false smiles.
