"Window" Excerpt

NOTE: The following scene should be played in a fun, relaxed way. The characters are both tired and the window watching is their form of entertainment like watching TV.

3. INT. DINING ROOM- DAY

GIRLFRIEND and JAKE sit down at the dinner table and watch an ELDERLY COUPLE from their dining table as the old couple slowly circles their room swaying together in each others’ arms like a pendulum.

JAKE
Yes! The curtains are finally
open.

GIRLFRIEND
Alright, that’s what I’m talkin’
about! What song do you think
they're dancing to?

JAKE
Probably something from the
fifties.

GIRLFRIEND
I think they're dancing to that
one song- what's it called again?

GIRLFRIEND claps her hands to the song Yakety Yak (1958) and sings the lyrics.

GIRLFRIEND
Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor-

JAKE
“Yakety Yak”? Why the hell would
they be dancing to that?

GIRLFRIEND
That's their jam! They met at a
party and the song was playing.
Had their first dance together
that night.

JAKE
And this could be their last...

GIRLFRIEND
Oh stop it.

JAKE
He had the sexual prowess of a
jungle cat and she was the
poacher that tamed him-

GIRLFRIEND
See, they're moving faster than
usual. And I don't think it's
that far fetched to think that
Grandma and Grandpa still have a
song. We should have one too.

JAKE
Quite the romantic, aren't you?

JAKE pushes his plate aside to pull her off her chair and wrap his hands around her waist. He sings nonsensical lyrics off-key. They spin around, laughing, stepping on each other's feet, knocking into chairs and table. JAKE and GIRLFRIEND stop by the window when they hear the downstairs neighbor hit a broom against the ceiling three times. SLOW ZOOM OUT- GIRLFRIEND shushes JAKE by covering his mouth as they stand in place giggling and laughing quietly.

NOTE: In the following scene, GIRLFRIEND is attempting to re-assure herself that everything will be OK and that her boyfriend JAKE will be there for her. She is scared and anxious. This can be played as emotional or dark as possible but not in a big operatic way. It has to be small but expressive.

7. INT. MOTHER’S LIVING ROOM- DAY

GIRLFRIEND is sitting on a couch in a homey living room, upset. An older woman enters the frame and sets down a tray of tea kettle and cups on the coffee table in front of the couch. She pours the hot tea into the cup as GIRLFRIEND talks.

GIRLFRIEND
I know that Jake will be
sleeping on the couch as usual...
I'll walk in and make dinner. I
know that he'll wake up just in
time to eat. Then we will both
turn our heads and see what the
old couple are up to... and make
up their stories just like we
always did.
(sigh)
I just don’t know... I don’t
know...
