"Window" Excerpt for Jake

NOTE: The following scene should be played in a fun, relaxed way. The characters are both tired and the window watching is their form of entertainment like watching TV.

GIRLFRIEND and JAKE sit down at the dinner table and watch an ELDERLY COUPLE from their dining table as the old couple slowly circles their room swaying together in each others’ arms like a pendulum.

Yes! The curtains are finally

Alright, that’s what I’m talkin’
about! What song do you think
they're dancing to?

Probably something from the

I think they're dancing to that
one song- what's it called again?

GIRLFRIEND claps her hands to the song Yakety Yak (1958) and sings the lyrics.

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor-

“Yakety Yak”? Why the hell would
they be dancing to that?

That's their jam! They met at a
party and the song was playing.
Had their first dance together
that night.

And this could be their last...

Oh stop it.

He had the sexual prowess of a
jungle cat and she was the
poacher that tamed him-

See, they're moving faster than
usual. And I don't think it's
that far fetched to think that
Grandma and Grandpa still have a
song. We should have one too.

Quite the romantic, aren't you?

JAKE pushes his plate aside to pull her off her chair and wrap his hands around her waist. He sings nonsensical lyrics off-key. They spin around, laughing, stepping on each other's feet, knocking into chairs and table. JAKE and GIRLFRIEND stop by the window when they hear the downstairs neighbor hit a broom against the ceiling three times. SLOW ZOOM OUT- GIRLFRIEND shushes JAKE by covering his mouth as they stand in place giggling and laughing quietly.
NOTE: The following scene is of JAKE making up stories of the girl next door (MARLENE) as he talks to his GIRLFRIEND. He is in a good mood when he talks about MARLENE.

We see the window that looks out to MARLENE’s window. JAKE lies down on the couch, allowing us to see his face in full view with the window behind him. In a series of fast cuts of JAKE from different angles we hear him talk with subtle entusiasm-

She has three sisters... and she
is the youngest. She’s always
wanted an older brother...

Back in California, she dropped
out of college because she wanted
to travel and see South America.

She likes to have a glass of
Pinot Noir and read Raymond
Chandler before bed.

She’s really a brunette, but she
dyed her hair red because her
favorite actress is Julianne

She listens to Ella Fitzgerald.
