Evan Rachel Wood was booked to play the original Mary Jane Watson, but she too had to exit because of a “scheduling problem.” Wood, who became an overnight celebrity after her performance in “Across the Universe,” was supposedly never 100 percent on being a part of the production, having said numerous times that nothing was definite. Wood and Alan Cumming, both friends of then-director Julie Taymor, left within one month of each other. The role was taken over by Jennifer Damiano.
