3. Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical
Bertie Carvel, “Matilda The Musical”
Santino Fontana, “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella”
Rob McClure, “Chaplin”
Billy Porter, “Kinky Boots”
Stark Sands, “Kinky Boots”
Will and Should Win: Bertie Carvel
The only thing wrong with Bertie Carvel taking home the Tony—which is one of the surefire wins of the night—is that he should have been placed in the featured category. His epic cross-dressing turn as the conniving headmistress Miss Trunchbull is Tony worthy, but with only two major numbers, he seems ill-placed here. However, Carvel won the leading actor Olivier award for his performance during the West End run, so there’s a precedent. The only possible upset would be Billy Porter, but with his “Kinky” co-star Stark Sands also in the pool, the vote will split and Carvel will take the trophy.
