3. Mariette Hartley in “The Morini Strad”

A lesser actor might succumb to the histrionics of an intergenerational two-hander, but Hartley, as violin virtuoso Erica Morini in Willy Holtzman’s play at the Colony Theatre, eschewed obvious technique. Subtly inhabiting every contradiction of a fairly conventional grande dame role, Hartley gave a transcendent performance that entered Rosemary Harris territory.
