Probably the biggest surprise, aside from the entire cast of “New Girl” being snubbed, was Julianna Margulies failing to land a nomination for her work on “The Good Wife” after three years of nominations and a win in 2011. Instead, Vera Farmiga of “Bates Motel” and Connie Britton of “Nashville” made their way in. In addition, Michael C. Hall failed to land a lead actor nomination for “Dexter” after five consecutive years of nods. The veteran was pushed out of a crowded field by newcomers Jeff Daniels for “The Newsroom” and Kevin Spacey for “House of Cards.”
Also overlooked was Eric Stonestreet of “Modern Family,” a two-time winner in the category of supporting comedy actor, and Jon Cryer, who won last year in lead actor for his work in "Two and a Half Men." Somewhat less surprising, only because they’d never been nominated before, were the omissions of Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” and Monica Potter of “Parenthood.” Both were considered strong contenders for their work the past season.
