10. Elizabeth Stanley in “Merrily We Roll Along (in Concert)”

Another production that revised critical opinion was the Encores! concert presentation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 fizzle, “Merrily We Roll Along.” Stanley played Gussie, the ambitious would-be star, with vulnerability and wicked insight. Sondheim, who sat across the aisle from me, beamed whenever she was onstage. I did too.
