6. James Earl Jones in “Gore Vidal’s The Best Man”

The legendary actor was at the very peak of his form as fictional American ex-president Arthur “Artie” Hockstader, a crusty white pragmatist wheeling and dealing at an unnamed political party’s 1960 national convention. Jones’ riveting mixture of gleeful grit and folksy sentimentality was a welcome example of imaginative colorblind casting.
