1. "Elizabeth"

Winning seven Academy Award nominations in 1998, "Elizabeth" was the semi-biogrpahical film that brought international recognition to Australian actress Cate Blanchett. The film loosely depicts the first half of Queen Elizabeth I of England's reign and completes the story in the 2007 sequel. "Elizabeth" is the epitome of the period film as far as awards are concerned, getting nominations for the extravagant costume designs and makeup.
