The story of rivalry, sex, and betrayal, originally set in Baroque France, has been adapted three times from the 18th century French novel of the same name. The first adaptation stayed true to its French setting and was directed by Stephen Frears in 1988, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story was remade a year later as "Valmont," (pictured) which starred Colin Firth and Annette Benning. The most recent "Dangerous Liaisons," starring Ziyi Zhang, is still a period piece, taking place in 1930s Shanghai.
