11. Naomi Watts, “The Impossible”

A mother’s love has never been more apparent than in Watts’ performance as Maria, the real-life survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Stranded with her oldest son, Lucas (Tom Holland), Maria spends much of the film cheating death while trying to get them to safety. Devastated both emotionally and physically, Maria is determined to save her son and also teach him the importance of kindness and compassion in the face of tragedy.
